I have been walking in the mountains and wild places of this planet since I was 13 years old. I adore it. An Outdoor Instructor for over 20 years I am now retired and enjoy the mountains of Snowdonia, North Wales, UK for myself once again.

Why do YOU walk ?

feature photo

As I was meandering along nearby stream, this evening, plugged into my mp3 player ( oh sin of sins). Sometimes tunes from our youth can act as catalysts for ideas in the here and now, when it struck me that I had been rather rude. For I have never asked you why you walk.

Why do you walk ? What is it that draws you ? Why the mountains ? Have you recently started ? Have you always done it ? Have you never done it !

There are several things that draw me to the mountains in particular, in part spiritual, much physical, and a lot of that ” I’m Alive ” feeling.. I like experiencing nature in all its’ stunning glory - mountain architecture is the very crust of our planet in its rawest state and yet it supports a complete eco-system capable of sustaining human existence, albeit at the very limits of our human abilities. The mountain landscape is a lesson in raw geography - glaciation especially - It is to be in one of the very engines of our physical environment. If the Amazon is the lungs of our system, the seas the winds bellows, then the mountains are the creators of our weather; the descending rivers the very veins and arteries of our lands, bringing down the fertile silt to the lower lands permitting life to flourish.

I love the quality of the light in the mountains, they way it constantly moves and evolves with the weather. The freshness of the streams, the smell of the earth and the vegetation. The Alpine smell, the smell of the land or sea on the wind.

I love the weather in the mountains, its’ changeability and rawness. The feeling at the end of the day that you have been into the wild - and lived ! Years ago I used to work on a commercial fishing boat and the rough days were always my favorite too.

All together, walking in the mountains becomes a sum-total experience that feeds the spirit and straightens the head.

why not share your thoughts ? I’d love to hear from you.
